'Busan Content Market 2022: A Global Showcase for Resonant Hallyu Media
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (headed by Minister Park Bo-gyun), in collaboration with Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Hyung-jun, Organizing Committee Chair), and the Busan Content Market Organizing Committee (referred to as the Organizing Committee), is set to host the Busan Content Market (BCM) 2022. The event will occur both in-person from June 8 to June 10 at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO), and online from June 8 to June 24 via the official website (www.ibcm.tv).
This year's BCM, themed "Your Story is Our Story," emphasizes the global embrace of distinctive, high-quality Hallyu content such as "Squid Game" and "Pachinko." The theme underscores the message that as barriers to accessing content diminish, global audiences can connect more deeply, transcending geographic boundaries through shared, quality storytelling.
Reengaging with the World: Face-to-Face Interaction Resumes
Marking its 16th occurrence, this year's BCM reintroduces in-person interactions with international buyers, revitalizing face-to-face engagements for the first time in three years due to COVID-19. The event will feature 400 companies from 43 countries and about 700 participants, including heavyweight domestic broadcasters (KBS, MBC, SBS, EBS, CJ ENM, JTBC) and international media players, encompassing broadcasters, production firms, and online video service (OTT) providers. BCM 2022 offers a rich agenda with B2B markets, investment initiatives, academic conferences, and supplementary programs.
Investment and Innovation at the Forefront
Dedicated investment sessions on June 8 and 9 will feature a panel of 26 investment advisors specializing in content. These sessions are designed to bolster business ties and foster investment in intellectual property across diverse media platforms including webtoons, games, individual media creators, the metaverse, and blockchain technologies.
Spotlight on Global Media Dynamics
A series of academic discussions will delve into current trends in broadcasting and video content. Notably, on June 9, the production team and cast of Apple TV's "Pachinko" will discuss the new challenges and opportunities in today’s global platform era, sharing behind-the-scenes stories and production insights. Translator Darcy Paquet, renowned for his work on "Parasite," will explore the intricacies and challenges of subtitle translation in the OTT space.
Celebrating 30 Years of ROK-PRC Relations
The event will also host a commemorative forum to discuss the evolution and future potential of Chinese-Korean drama collaborations, marking 30 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Additional discussions will explore topics like sustainable content development, emerging technologies such as the metaverse, and the impact of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) on the creative industries.
Engaging Side Events
The BCM will also feature an array of side events, including previews and presentations of new broadcast formats, business presentations by Chinese online video service iQIYI, and insightful panels from production teams behind popular series on Netflix and TVing, such as "All of Us Are Dead" and "Juvenile Justice." These sessions aim to highlight the evolving nature of media platforms and the dynamic landscape of content production.
Director Hwang Seong-woon of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism noted, "With the rising global trust and expectation for Hallyu content, we are enthusiastic about the successful execution of this year’s Busan Content Market. The Ministry remains committed to vigorously supporting the production of outstanding broadcast and video content and facilitating their access to international markets."
