'Busan Content Market' Pioneers New Online Trading Venue

The 'Busan Content Market (BCM) 2020' has successfully concluded its first-ever online event in Busan, the city renowned for its film and video content. According to Busan City, the entirely virtual BCM 2020, which spanned from November 11 to December 18, concluded its 38-day run on the 21st. Now in its 14th year, BCM 2020 saw the participation of companies from 37 countries, along with domestic and international buyers and sellers, achieving transaction totals of $85.76 million. This impressive figure was reached despite the event's shift to an online format due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Operating under the theme 'Post-COVID-19, Connect the World with Content,' BCM 2020 featured an array of programs including the BCM Market, BCM Conference, and BCM Funding. The BCM Market swiftly transitioned to an online platform in response to COVID-19, evolving into an 'online virtual exhibition' apt for the "untact" era. The platform showcased broadcasting content from 356 broadcasters and production companies worldwide, streamed live to facilitate online business consultations.

The BCM Conference, conducted live on November 11 and 12, included 15 sessions where experts from 17 countries discussed the transformations and future strategies within the content industry prompted by COVID-19 via video conference. The discussions are expected to extend beyond the event to better prepare for the post-coronavirus landscape. Additionally, the content of the conference was accessible on-demand throughout the 38 days of the BCM Market, emphasizing the benefits of the online event format.

The 'Korea Content Village' spotlighted materials from 27 regional broadcasting stations, greatly assisting domestic content firms in reaching global markets during the pandemic. BCM Funding, conducted on November 25 and 26, featured activities such as biz-matching, Cultural Content Fund investment planning meetings, and BCM Global Pitching, all streamed live online. The concurrent biz-matching sessions held in Seoul and Busan enabled about 110 instances of remote online consultations, underscoring the potential and efficacy of business consultations in a contactless era.

This year, Busan-based companies received full support for their virtual exhibition fees. As Busan continues to develop as a leading city in the industry, these resources are proving to be invaluable.
