Busan Content Market (BCM) 2019 Concludes Successfully

The 'Busan Content Market (BCM) 2019' concluded successfully, witnessing participation from 730 companies and 3,000 domestic and international buyers and sellers from 48 countries. Held at the BEXCO from May 8th to 11th, BCM 2019 achieved unprecedented scale this year with various new initiatives, including the introduction of a registration fee, the establishment of a dedicated zone for Busan companies to explore new markets, the introduction of prize money for the Global Pitching sessions, and the establishment of a new sector to support local small production companies.

The event expanded its sales network into new regions including Europe and South America, attracting participants from 11 new countries and despite the implementation of a participation fee, BCM 2019 garnered transaction results of $120 million.

For the first time, BCM 2019 introduced a registration and entrance fee, established a dedicated zone for Busan companies known as the "BCM Busan Zone," and incorporated a global pitching session with cash prizes to enhance the overall program. These new elements were met with strong positive feedback from the participants.

This year's BCM was not only about transactions but also included enriching programs like BCM Conference, BCM Academy, BCM Global Pitching & Business Matching, and BCM Funding events. The conference sessions, conducted live on May 10th and 11th, covered topics from the trends on global OTT platforms to the emerging fields of the metaverse, memes, and NFTs.

The BCM Academy provided lectures on content strategies during the OTT wars era by experts from Tving and JTBC. To support ongoing education, the Organizing Committee will offer VOD replays on their website until the end of November.

BCM Funding facilitated one-on-one investment consultations, connecting 24 cultural content fund managers and domestic investment experts with content producers. This initiative not only introduced excellent domestic productions to global buyers but also provided insights and investment plans for the video industry.

A highlight of BCM was the partnership between drama production company Channel Okto and Korea Investment Partners, who signed a MOU for drama content production.

BCM 2019 also featured a new media experience zone, transformed through a media facade that showcased vibrant visuals. Notable creators from CJ ENM, including HEOPAP, Shukii, KIMDAX, Egg&Bugs, and SOF, attended the event, conducting live internet broadcasts in a festival-like atmosphere that captivated the audience.

Officials from Busan Metropolitan City and the Organizing Committee expressed their ambitions for the future, stating, "During the market event, we initiated discussions to establish joint pavilions with Canadian companies and to form a consortium with national broadcasters for next year’s business plans. This event marks a step towards making Busan a global hub city for the video content trade market, not just in Asia but worldwide. We are committed to elevating Busan’s status as a leading city in the video content industry by actively supporting local companies in pioneering new markets."
